In einer kurzen Einführung werden die Fragen angesprochen, warum JPEG entwickelt wurde, was JPEG eigentlich ist und welche Vorteile diese Kompressionsmethode bietet. Danach geht es weiter mit einer kleinen Übersicht über die einzelnen Komprimierungsstufen und 2 Varianten der Komprimierung (Progressive Variante und Hierarchische Variante). Im weiteren Verlauf wird dann auf die Leuchtdichte (Luminance), die DCT (discrete cosine transform) (sowohl 1-dimensional, als auch 2-dimensional) eingegangen. Bevor zum Schluss auf die Punkte DCT in der Praxis und die Quantisierung eingegangen wird.
